ETHNOGRAPHIC FILM AND VISUAL ANTHROPOLOGY IN THE CIRCUMPOLAR NORTH
Side event forming part of the 43rd NAFA international ethnographic film festival in Kabelvåg, northern Norway.
It is hardly surprising that the circumpolar north has played an important role in the history of the Nordic Anthropological Film Association, given that all Nordic countries are related to the Arctic in one way or the other. The first time we had the ‘Arctic’ as a thematic side event at one of our festivals, was in Aarhus in 1984, with Greenland as the main theme. As part of that we showed Friedrich Dalsheim’s classic, The Wedding of Palo (1934), based on the screen play of Knud Rasmussen. In Kabelvåg we plan to kick off the side event in a similar manner, by screening Sakari Pälsi’s Pictures from the Arctic (1917).
Otherwise the event will consist of:
· A master class on ethnographic film in the circumpolar north, given by Dr Jouko Aaltonen (Director, Illume OY/Researcher, Aalto University)
· Film screenings, some of which may be based on films selected among the films submitted for the festival
· Short presentations on practice-based visual anthropology projects in the Arctic.
